A few days ago, I decided to do a little solo adventure into the Bernese Alps of Switzerland. I wanted to go somewhere with amazing views but I was not up for a huge trek up a mountain. So, I found Schilthorn! It is easily accessible and the views are stunning so it was exactly what I was looking for.

Schilthorn is a summit that sits above the small village of Mürren. To get to the top, I first had to travel by train to Lauterbrunnen. The next step was taking a cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp train station because the only way to reach Mürren is by taking a mountain train as it is a carless village! Then from the train station in Mürren, I took two more cable cars to reach the top of the Schilthorn summit, Piz Gloria.

The ride up was really quick and the views were amazing but the only downside was the amount of people who were also travelling up. As you can imagine, Switzerland has many tourists because of all the beautiful mountains, villages, lakes, and even cities you can explore. I expected there to be lots of people and I prepared for crowds but the cable cars were quite full and as I have a little fear of heights and being stuck in a moving glass box that is travelling on a cable over a mountain….. you can imagine it was a little bit scary 🙃. BUT, it was totally worth it in the end and once I saw the view from the top I totally forgot about being a sardine in a sweaty cable car with a bunch of strangers.

Once I made it to the summit, I checked out the observation deck! I felt a bit of the altitude change at first as the elevation is at almost 3,000 meters! At the top, there is a really cool revolving restaurant as well as a gift shop and a sitting area. You can also go outside and walk around the many little paths and walkways so you can get views from all the different angles. One thing I found really interesting is that a James Bond movie (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) was filmed at that location in 1969! So there were a bunch of little tributes to James Bond including a big ‘007’ that is displayed on the sides of the observation deck. They were even playing James Bond movies inside!

As for the more logistical part of the trip, you do have to buy a ticket to take the cable cars from Mürren to the top of Schilthorn. The cost is about 80.- Swiss francs and you also have to pay accordingly for the train tickets. I am not exactly sure the price of the train tickets as I have a SwissPass that I pay for yearly and I can take almost any form of public transportation as well as receive discounts! Such as paying half price for the cable car tickets (I would definitely recommend this pass if you are moving to Switzerland!! Totally worth it). There are a couple different ways to reach Mürren (Where you take the cable car up the mountain) but I would recommend starting in Lauterbrunnen as I found everything was laid out in such an organized and efficient way. There are lots of signs telling you where to go once you arrive at the train station there. It is super easy to follow and very efficient! The cable cars leave approximately every 10-15 minutes so you never have to wait very long. If you want to find out more about how to get to the summit, check out this website! And of course many different hikes you can take if you are more ambitious than me 😉

So, I would 100% recommend this trip if you are visiting Switzerland! Everything has the typical “Swiss” feel that you would expect when you visit.
