One of the best things about living in Switzerland is getting to experience so many beautiful locations. We drove just 2 hours outside of Zürich, and suddenly were surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery of the Bernese Oberlands.

We chose our location based on the airbnb, there were a few other ideas we had first before we ended up booking in Lauterbrunnen, but I’m actually super glad we ended up there! Our airbnb was located right in the village and had a great view, I would really recommend a stay here! I will give the link here, but I think you need to be a member of airbnb in order to open it. It was super clean and in the perfect location to explore the area.

We started our itinerary on Friday with a walk to Stechelberg, where normally you would be able to see 72 waterfalls throughout the valley. However, it was snowing pretty hard and the waterfalls were all frozen anyway! But it was still a beautiful walk through the towering cliffs. You can find out more about the walk we did here.

If you are planning to stay in Lauterbrunnen Valley, there is a Coop right next to the train station which is where we got all of our food/supplies for the weekend.

After our snowy walk, we headed back to the airbnb and enjoyed a cozy night in as we had early plans the next morning!

On Saturday, we woke up quite early to head up to Schilthorn – Piz Gloria, a mountain summit nearby. It was totally worth the early wake up because we traveled up through the fog and into the clear blue skies where the sun had just started to rise over the mountains. Getting here is quite easy but also on the pricey side. We took the Gondola starting in Stechelberg. From there, we had to take 4 gondolas to reach the very top. The round trip costs 108 CHF and 54 CHF if you have the Half Fare card.

One of the stops along the way is a cute, carless mountain village called Mürren! I would totally recommend a stop here if you have the time. Another stop called Birg is where you can do the famous thrill walk along the mountains edge. There is also a restaurant here (currently doing takeaway due to Covid restrictions!)

We went all the way to the last stop, Schilthorn. Here you will find a beautiful mountain top viewpoint as well as restaurant and James Bond museum. We got a takeaway coffee and just enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the sun coming over the mountains, people skiing down, and of course the view of the famous mountain summits: Eiger, Mönch, & Jungfrau.

After our adventure to Schilthorn, we decided to go sledding! There are so many great sledding trails around Switzerland with stunning views and this trail definitely did not disappoint! It’s called the “Fox Run” starting in Kleine Scheidegg and ending in Wengen.

We rented the sleds from the local bike shop in Lauterbrunnen. Each sled cost 12 CHF. Then we took the train from Lauterbrunnen up to Kleine Scheidegg (the train ride was about 40 CHF per person). The sun was starting to set at the top as we enjoyed a small picnic with gorgeous mountain views before we started the trail down to Wengen.

The trail is about 4.5 km long and would normally take around 30 mins. But we stopped a lot, took some pictures, and took our time going down. Once we got to Wengen, we hopped on the train back down to Lauterbrunnen. We got pretty lucky because there are a lot less tourists around due to Corona times and we practically had the sledding trail all to ourselves on a Saturday afternoon. This would never happen if the circumstances were “normal” during the skiing season.

The sled trail was probably the highlight of my trip. It was so much fun and I think we laughed the whole way down. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for the perfect amount of a relaxed yet adventurous mountain getaway.
